Minister Yaacob Ibrahim Launches Groundbreaking Ceremony of Asia’s First Major Organic Waste Bio-Methanisation & Renewable Energy Plant
15 September 2005
The ground-breaking ceremony of IUT Global’s Organic Waste Bio-Methanisation and Renewable Energy Plant at Tuas Bay Drive was officiated today by Dr. Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources.
Making a significant milestone in Singapore’s environment waste management industry, the Tuas facility, with the capacity of processing up to 800 tons of organic waste per day, is the first bio-methanisation and renewable energy plant in Singapore and the largest of its kind in Asia.
At full capacity, the plant will reduce by more than half the amount of food waste currently delivered to local incineration plants for disposal. Using a highly-efficient fermentation, or bio-methanisation process, the recycling rate of food waste in Singapore will be significantly increased and more effectively recycled back into the environment in the form of sanitised, nutrient-rich compost used as a soil media for organic farming and the landscaping industry. In the process, high-quality bio-gas is harnessed for the production of renewable electrical energy, or green power. At full capacity, it is estimated that more than 6 MW of electrical energy per hour is generated, providing enough power for over 10,000 households or equivalent industrial facilities. This net energy producing process is further augmented with an in-built heat recovery system for district cooling or heating applications.
The impact of this new technology on current organic waste management in Singapore is nothing short of remarkable with tangible cost-savings to all food waste generators and positive trickle-down effects on the environment. By significantly reducing the amount of organic waste currently incinerated, the volume of discharge into the atmosphere and to local landfills is also considerably reduced, which in turn will alleviate future needs for costly incineration facilities and landfills. Further, the generation of green or renewable power not only provides a cleaner energy alternative, but also contributes to long-term reduction of Green House Gas emissions and Global Warming.
IUT Global is pleased to acknowledge environmentally-friendly and forward looking companies including Kopitiam Group of Companies, Shaw Towers Realty, T&C Manufacturing Co. and Far East Organisation Hotels (FEO HOTELS) for joining us in preserving the environment. FEO HOTELS is the first hotel chain to commit sending organic waste from all its establishments for processing at IUT Global’s plant. FEO is also studying the potential of extending this commitment to cover other shopping centres and buildings in its portfolio. Companies across a broad number of sectors who have come on board IUT Global’s Qualified Partner Company (QPC) scheme include chocolate intermediates manufacturer T&C Manufacturing Co., shopping mall at Shaw Leisure Gallery, and the largest food service management in Singapore, Kopitiam Group of Companies – companies who are at the forefront of integrating Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) into their business.
Serving as a landmark reference for the Asia Pacific region, the flagship plant will be IUT Global’s customised solution to the environmental waste management needs of the city-state and laying the foundation for a quantum leap in the waste management industry for the region.
