Landfill Remediation Project in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates
The Largest Landfill Remediation Project World-wide
The Sharjah Emirate is the third largest emirate of the United Arab Emirates and lies right next to Dubai on the Arabian Gulf.
Owing to the rapid expansion of the city of Sharjah, its old landfill which was formerly situated outside the city is now surrounded by residential districts, the University of Sharjah and industrial sites. In addition, the bottom of the landfill was flooded from time to time due to the rise and fall of the groundwater table which has caused an odour nuisance to nearby residences.

Since mid-September 2004, the landfill was excavated and the material processed. Non-contaminated, sandy material and rock were returned to the site in order to make the land usable for urban development (specifically for construction of a shopping centre, a hospital, housing estates and a highway).
For this purpose, IUT delivered to Sharjah four mechanical sorting systems, as well as two SMELL WELL Systems for the aeration of buried material prior to excavation.

The first part of the landfill represents a volume of about 4.5 million m³ (out of a total of about 6.5 million m³), making it the world’s largest landfill remediation project.
