Organic Waste Composting

Using Technology to Assist in Composting

Under natural conditions, plant matter decomposes entirely without human assistance, thereby creating a substrate for new life. However, with the assistance of technology the composting process can be further accelerated, with improvements in the quality of compost required for all horticultural soil blends for a wide variety of flora.

IUT’s Organic Waste Composting Solution – Aerobic Treatment

IUT uses the same processes as in nature, coupled with technology for highly efficient treatment of large amounts and variety of organic matter from domestic, commercial, industrial as well as agricultural waste, to obtain valuable compost.

IUT offers four comprehensive technology solutions for organic waste composting using aerobic treatment, namely:
Windrows on Ventilated/Unventilated Floors
Box Composting
Dynamic Composting
Rotte-Filter Compost Process

SOLUTION 1: WINDROWS ON VENTILATED/UNVENTILATED FLOORS

Floor structures allowing ventilation of the composting windrows (triangular or flat) are quickly and easily constructed using the low-cost, patent-protected RFK (Rotte-Filter Compost) modules, without any major expenditure on air ducts and drainage systems!

The RFK modules are easy to clean, cheap to maintain and operate (with low air resistance), and can be used with both positive and negative pressure ventilation.

SOLUTION 2: BOX COMPOSTING

IUT’s Box Composting System is designed for small to medium throughput capacities (less than 100 tons/day) and for difficult feed materials.

Composting in closed boxes accelerate the decomposition process while creating more homogeneous conditions within the material and improving the final product. The boxes are open or fitted with plastic covers that can be adjusted for degrees of aeration.

SOLUTION 3: DYNAMIC COMPOSTING

IUT’s Dynamic Composting System is used for large to very large feedstock quantities of 100 tons/day or more.

In the Dynamic Composting System, the feed material is placed in flat windrows within boxes that are 5 m wide and up to 110 m long. The feed material is moved with a fully automated turning machine. This allows intense mixing by the rotating drum and allows continuous make up of materials losses due to decomposition.

The largest dynamic composting facility erected by IUT handles an intake of 1,200 tons/day!

SOLUTION 4: ROTTE-FILTER COMPOST PROCESS

The patented Rotte-Filter Compost (spelt as “Kompost” in German) or RFK Process for aeration during the composting process boasts of high efficacy, reduced waste air emissions and a more evenly distribution of water content.

The RFK Process basically employs a combination of negative-pressure and positive-pressure forced air ventilation, which is switched between different composting floors or boxes at pre-set intervals. This results in an intense exchange of bacteria, leading to high activity and temperatures in the composting system.

The RFK Process is used on ventilated composting floors (triangular or flat windrows), box and dynamic composting systems.

Accessory Systems

All composting systems erected by IUT features the various processes combined with treatment, waste air purification systems (bio-filter, bio-scrubber, thermal oxidation) and post-treatment of the composted material required at each specific site. IUT can in this respect provide technology on blended soil plants and provide know how on formulation of the various soil blends to suit a range of virgin soil conditions and plant types.
